Business Chamber launches ‘Reece McDonald Local Legend Award’

The Southland Business Chamber has launched a special new award as part of the 2025 Datagrid NZ Southland Business Excellence Awards — the Reece McDonald Local Legend Award.

This people’s choice award honours the late Reece McDonald, former Board President of the Southland Business Chamber, who was not only a respected business leader but also a tireless community supporter.

Through his work as owner of Good Tech and his dedication to local causes — from grassroots sports teams to major fundraisers — Reece became a connector of people, a champion of generosity, and a true Southland legend.

The award will celebrate a current business owner who goes above and beyond for the community, embodying the same spirit of generosity and connection that Reece was so well known for.

“This is a special tribute for a special guy,” says Reece’s wife, Joanne Sharp.

“Reece had a gift for bringing people together, supporting others, and always doing the right thing — even when no one was watching. I miss him so much, but I know he would be truly honoured to be remembered this way.”

Stage 1: Nominations Open Today

Chamber members and the wider Southland community are encouraged to nominate a business owner who makes a meaningful difference in their community. Nominations are open from April 15 to May 15 via the Chamber’s website.

Stage 2: Voting Opens in June

Once finalists are selected, public voting will run from 1 June to 20 August, with the winner announced ahead of the Business Excellence Awards Gala Dinner on 19 September.

“This award is about celebrating the quiet heroes of our business community — those who give time, energy, and heart to make Southland a better place,” says Chamber Chief Executive Sheree Carey.

“Reece did that every day, and we want to honour others who are carrying that same torch.”
