Today marks the fifth anniversary of the historic direct jet service between Auckland and Invercargill — a service that has transformed connectivity, driven economic growth, and created new opportunities across Southland. Invercargill Airport, alongside its regional partners — including business, community, funding, iwi and civic leaders — is thrilled to celebrate this milestone, reflecting on how the jet service has bolstered the community and invigorated local business.

Launched in August 2019, the direct jet service was the culmination of years of strategic planning, research, and strong community advocacy. From its inception as a trial, the service quickly became a fixture in New Zealand’s airways, thanks to overwhelming support from businesses, residents, and visitors.

Invercargill Airport CEO Stuart Harris reflects on the transformative impact the jet service has had on the region: “Five years ago, the community came together and lobbied to create better connectivity for Southland. Today, we celebrate how far we’ve come. The direct flights to Auckland have not only opened doors for our local businesses but also strengthened ties across the country. We’ve seen our tourism numbers grow, businesses thrive, and more people consider Southland as their home.”

The benefits of this service have been far-reaching. The convenience of a direct route to Auckland has allowed Southland businesses to expand their reach, connecting them to larger markets while facilitating the efficient transportation of perishable and high-value goods. The increased accessibility has also bolstered the region’s tourism sector, making Southland a more attractive destination for both domestic and international visitors.

“Our exporters now have a reliable and efficient way to move goods in and out of the region,” continues Harris. “And for our residents, it has meant greater access to travel and business opportunities, all while showcasing Invercargill as a gateway to the beauty of Southland.”

Invercargill Airport and its partners, including Air New Zealand, remain committed to supporting the growth and vibrancy of the region. “We’re looking ahead to a bright future, with continued investment in infrastructure to support, tourism and business. The last five years have only been the beginning, and we’re excited to see what the next five will bring,” says Harris.

As Southland celebrates five years of direct jet service to Auckland, the region is more connected, confident, and poised for future success than ever before.
