In a Nutshell
- DEMAND – Volumes remain low. Export orders have slightly increased in emerging markets, but remains low for the rest of the globe.
- CAPACITY – Capacity is sufficient to support the continued low demand. Belly capacity continued to increase
- CARRIERS – Competitive spot market continued on most trade lanes. Slight increase observed in both ad hoc and charter rates
- RATES – Rates remain flat.
- FUEL – Jet fuel prices are still higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Ocean Freight Market Update
May 2023
Global schedule reliability remained stable in the past three months, but in February, it recorded a remarkable increase of 7.7 percentage points.
Compared to last year, reliability was up a staggering 26%. While half of the 34 trade lanes showed improvement, the biggest improvement was the Oceania-Asia trade, increasing from 38.7% in January to 51.9% in February. Meanwhile, Oceania-North America saw the largest decrease. Overall, Asia-North America West Coast experienced a decrease of -4.0%, but the East Coast improved by 3.5%. In addition to that, Transatlantic Eastbound saw a slight decrease, but Westbound increased significantly.
The blank sailing program continues to balance out demand and supply, which leads to full vessels in the coming weeks for Asia Pacific to Europe.

- DEMAND – Demand in Europe & North America remains slow. It is however recovering in some parts of the globe.
- CAPACITY – Capacity remains stable. Thanks to the ongoing implementation of blank sailing programs on specific trades
- CARRIERS – Competitive spot market continued on most trade lanes. Slight increase observed in both ad hoc and charter rates
- RATES – The ocean carriers posted significantly lower Q1 results.
