Communication Challenges in the Workplace
Today, the Southland Business Chamber hosted a Dyslexia and Communication in the Workplace session, facilitated by Chris Cole, Adaptive Thinking Adviser and co-founder of Unlock Innovation.
The session explored how communication challenges are often misunderstood as capability issues, when they are more commonly the result of differing communication styles, processing preferences, and expectations. Drawing on both professional expertise and lived experience, Chris provided participants with practical insights into dyslexic thinking and its impact on workplace communication.
Participants gained a greater understanding of why communication can sometimes break down, the barriers that can affect workplace interactions, and the small but meaningful adjustments that can create more inclusive and effective communication. Practical strategies were shared to support communication before, during, and after meetings, when providing instructions, giving feedback, clarifying expectations, and through both written and verbal interactions.
Chris’s engaging and authentic facilitation style encouraged thoughtful discussion and reflection, with attendees appreciating the opportunity to better understand diverse thinking styles and their application in everyday workplaces.
The session provided practical tools, increased awareness, and actionable strategies to help participants build more inclusive workplaces where people communicate with greater confidence, clarity, and understanding.
