Essentials of Leadership

Twenty Southland businesses successful completed the Southland Business Chamber’s two-day Essentials of Leadership programme, held in Invercargill. Tailored for emerging leaders, the course provided participants with practical tools to lead confidently and effectively.

A Transformative Learning Experience

Facilitated by leadership expert Mark Greaney, the programme emphasised applying theoretical concepts to real-world situations, aligning with the 70:20:10 model of learning. Participants engaged in sessions covering self-awareness, team empowerment, and performance management. Key topics included:

  • Understanding personal leadership styles and leveraging strengths

  • Effective communication and active listening skills

  • Time management and prioritisation techniques

  • Building high-performance teams and coaching using the GROW model

  • Providing constructive feedback and handling difficult conversations.

Each attendee received a personalised DiSC Leadership profile and a copy of Greaney’s book, Leading People: A Practical Toolbox for Managers. To reinforce learning, the programme includes a virtual group follow-up session four weeks after the in-person workshop, along with small coaching groups for ongoing support

Positive Impact and Future Opportunities

Feedback from participants highlighted the course’s practical approach and supportive environment.

The Essentials of Leadership programme is part of the Chamber’s commitment to fostering leadership development in the region. The next session is scheduled for November 2025.
