The newly established Southland Engineering Cluster is hoping to open more doors for the engineering sector in the region.
The new cluster was officially launched at the Southland Business Chamber in Invercargill on Tuesday.
Engineering in the south has historically been quite reliant on the smelter at Tiwai Point. There is now a quest to look at different collaborate around different potential contract options.
The vision is to enable international and national contracts to be fulfilled in the south, leading to the growth of industries, more job opportunities, robust regional economies, and the creation of additional skilled positions.
Engineering Cluster chair Dean Addie said it was important to build a collaborative industry to showcase the capabilities of our region.
“This will effectively demonstrate to potential clients what we can achieve and the vast breadth of knowledge and skill we bring to the table.
“By working collaboratively, we will empower our regions to bid for large engineering contracts with confidence.”
“We believe that Southland’s people are not only highly skilled but also remarkably adaptable, with world-leading technology and projects emerging from our region.
Southland Engineering Cluster Manager Brendan Gray said: “I am thrilled to be on the ground, getting to understand the needs and desires of the engineering community, to fully support their transition and growth into a new era of business opportunities.”
Those that become part of the Southland Engineering Cluster will have a team working with them to provide support.
This initiative is hoped to have far-reaching ripple effects throughout the economy, benefiting not only the engineering industries but various other sectors.
Addie said: “We are scaling up an already successful industry with a goal to collaboratively be world-leading. Your business can be an integral part of this exciting journey.”
